To play SopCast streams on VLC, firstly you have to configure it. Open SopCast, then log-in (recommend Anonymous), and click the Option button. In the General section, select Use my own media player. Point it to the VLC's installation path and that's it.
You will need the help of Notepad++ in order to edit the channels. Once you have installed the application, access the path below and open the chlist_live.txt file. Use a channel information from the file and then modify yours accordingly. Once you are done modifying, close the file and restart SopCast. The new channel will be seen in the channels list.
Yes, SopCast player can be used as standalone software or be embedded in a web browser using an ActiveX plugin. If you wish to know more about it and the improvements and changes that occured in the previous versions please visit SopCast's website.
You can browse the built-in database of SopCast. There are some live channels available for watching. But to obtain other streams in sop:// format, you will have to use the results posted on various websites listed on Google Search: https://goo.gl/R7wdLm

Yes, there is a version of SopCast for Mac OS X and it can be downloaded from the official website.
The latest version is 1.6.4 and it's compatible with Yosemite, that means you can install it on Mac OS X 10.6 and up.
If you have problems with the latest version, pick the previous one. It might not have compatibility with Yosemite, but it will work without bugs.
